About this Website

There are countless reasons to eat seasonal produce

  • Foods that are in season are typically picked at the peaks of ripeness, which leads to higher concentrations of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
  • Eating seasonally reduces the need for transportation and energy-intensive methods of cultivation and storage, leading to a lower carbon footprint.
  • Choosing seasonal produce supports local farmers and markets.

A few notes about selection and seasonality

  • The selection of produce as well as its seasonality is based on research that is colored by Alma’s bias, opinions, and experience.
  • I tried to represent each item’s peak season, even for items that are grown year-round in California. For example, kale and frisée are grown year-round and can be found in farmers’ markets every month. However, they are often considered cold season crops so the harvest is most abundant in the fall, winter, and spring.
  • Not all items shown are grown in California. For example, lychee is available in many grocery stores in the summer months but is generally imported from Mexico or Asia.
